De BMW Z1 werd in 1986 ontworpen door Harm Lagaay. Van de auto, die in 1987 gepresenteerd werd, zijn tussen 1989 en 1991 precies 8.000 exemplaren geproduceerd. Meer dan drie kwart hiervan werden verkocht op de eigen markt, Duitsland. Het opvallendste aan deze auto waren de deuren, die in de carrosserie konden wegzakken. Die carrosserie bestaat volledig uit Thermoplast, door General Electric in koetswerkpanelen gegoten. De wagen was tevens de eerste wagen ter wereld die met standaard banden 1g in bochten kon halen, dit mede door de motorkap in omgekeerd vleugelprofiel en de dwarsgeplaatste uitlaat die eveneens een omgekeerd vleugelprofiel had. In eerste instantie zouden er slechts 4000 Z1's geproduceerd gaan worden maar toen de auto eenmaal bij de dealers arriveerde waren er al meer dan 5000 bestellingen en is er besloten de productie te verdubbelen naar 8.000 stuks.

Een ander opvallend kenmerk van deze Z1 is het prachtige lederen 3-spaaks stuur. Zowel het dashboard als het middenconsole zijn met zorg afgewerkt in leer.

The BMW Z1 was designed by Harm Lagaay in 1986. Exactly 8,000 examples of the car, which was presented in 1987, were produced between 1989 and 1991. More than three quarters of these were sold in its home market, Germany. The most striking feature of this car was the doors, which could sink into the bodywork. That body consisted entirely of Thermoplastic, moulded into body panels by General Electric. The car was also the first car in the world that could achieve 1g in cornering with standard tyres, partly because of the inverted wing profile bonnet and the transverse exhaust that also had an inverted wing profile. Initially, only 4,000 Z1s were to be produced but once the car arrived at dealers, there were already more than 5,000 orders and it was decided to double production to 8,000 units.
