Fixie or fixed-gear bicycles are urban bikes which are currently setting the trend due to its simplicity, retro style and easy maintenance. In this type of bicycle, which only has one speed, the drive sprocket (or cog) is threaded or bolted directly to the hub of the back wheel, so that the rider cannot stop pedalling. When the rear wheel turns, the pedals turn in the same direction. This allows a cyclist to brake the bicycle with the legs and bodyweight, by resisting the rotation of the cranks.

In general, fixed-gear bikes are equipped with “flip-flop” hubs, designed to accept sprockets on either side. These permit a choice of two different gears by removing the rear wheel and turning it around. The most common use for a flip-flop hub is to have a fixed sprocket on one side, and a single-speed freewheel on the other side.
