  •      Henry William Williamson (1895–1977) was an English writer who wrote novels concerned with wildlife, English social history and ruralism.
  •      "The Dark Lantern" (1951) can be seen as the start of the major novel series 'A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight' - a series of 15 novels following the life of Phillip Maddison from his birth in the late 1890s till the early 1950s , based loosely on Williamson's own life and experiences. If considered as one novel, it is one of the longest in English.
  • Plot: Richard Maddison, a clerk in the City of London, struggles on a few shillings a week. He meets Hetty Turney, daughter of a prosperous city merchant and falls in love, but he is not the kind of man her father wants her to marry.
  •      Dedication: Malcolm Elwin (1903-1973) was an English author, critic, and editor, probably best known as a biographer. After graduating from Oxford University, he co-founded and edited the periodical West Country, and also edited the series Macdonald Illustrated Classics. He was an expert in 19th-century literature, and wrote historical criticism of the Victorian era as well as biographies of Charles Reade, Thackeray, Thomas De Quincey, and others.
