Linn Majik 6100 power amplifier

This is a 6 by 100 watts per channel power amplifier (in a 4 ohm load) with the active (Aktiv in Linn-parlance) compatible cards for the Linn Kaber speakers. These cards are divided into two or more of the speakers, and they are more often used by the speaker than passive speakers. As well as advantages for clarity, this means that the frequency response can be changed for the bass, mid-range and treble (within limited parameters).

Linn Kaber Floor standing Loudspeakers

These are discrete floor standing loudspeakers ( 900mm (H) x 192mm (W) x 280mm (D) ) known for their dynamic sound and accurate bass. These are Aktiv Kabers, meaning that the internal crossover has been removed. They should not be connected to a normal amplifier as it would blow the tweeter - talking about which, the original tweeters have been replaced with new tweeters with a smoother sound but the original tweeters will be supplied with the speakers, if you wish to return them to their original status.

The Kaber user manual describes the advantages of active speakers

" With a passive loudspeaker, the signal from the amplifier is divided into three frequency bands, (bass, bass / mid and treble) by a passive filter built into the loudspeaker cabinet. This is powered by the signal itself, absorbing some of the power amplifiers, and preventing the amplifier from just controlling the loudspeaker.

Although the highest quality components are used in highspeakers, they have to handle extremely high power without overheating, and are more suitable for handling the fine details of music.

An active crossover does not make these compromises. It is a good choice of signals from the preamplifier of three frequency bands, and feeds each to its own power amplifier. The loudspeaker drive units are directly controlled by the power amplifiers. The low power of the active crossover means better filtering, and accurate amplitude and time response for the KABER loudspeaker. "

In active mode, there is significant bass output to around 25 Hz - much less than the 60 odd Hz that can be achieved through most 'bookshelf' speakers - but the bass is very well controlled. This is even more the case when the Space Optimization available in the Majik DSM is properly set up, as it has been broken down by the room. The speakers work best to close a solid wall, slightly toed-in. Where this is not possible, Linn 's Space Optimization software solution, available through the DSM with a specific profile for the Kaber, can compensate for some degree of less than ideal placement.
