Ivan Lackovic was a Croatian “naïve” painter best known for his works depicting rural village life, flowers, and people. His paintings often contain surreal elements which lend his images a symbolic, profound undertone. Born on January 1, 1932 in Batinske, Croatia, Lackovic worked as a laborer in the fields and forest as a youth and taught himself to paint with watercolors. The artist later moved to Zagreb, where he met the illustrator and theater designer and subsequently worked in his studio.
