Bohemund the Seventh, Count
Bohemund VII of Tripoli (c. 1261–1287) was Count of Tripoli and ruled from 1275 until his death in 1287. He was a member of the powerful dynasty of the Counts of Toulouse, who had played a significant role in the Middle East since the First Crusade. Bohemund succeeded his father, Bohemund VI, at a young age and was initially under the regency of his mother, Sibylla of Armenia.
His reign was marked by deep internal divisions within the county. There were fierce conflicts with the Knights Templar, who held significant power in the region and often acted independently. Bohemund also became embroiled in disputes with local nobles such as Guy II of Gibelet, further weakening the authority of the county.
Despite these challenges, Bohemund managed to maintain a degree of control, though he was unable to establish lasting authority. He died suddenly in 1287 without leaving an heir, which created a power vacuum and led to further political instability.
Two years later, in 1289, the Mamluks of Egypt took advantage of the county’s weakened state. Under the leadership of Sultan Qalawun, they captured the city of Tripoli, bringing the county to an end. This marked the fall of one of the last strongholds of the Crusader states in the Holy Land. Bohemund’s death thus signaled the beginning of the final decline of the Frankish presence in the Levant.
