WWII U.S. Signal Corps Developing Equipment PH-253-C (1944) – Complete with Case, Rare Film Processing Unit
A very scarce original U.S. Army Signal Corps Developing Equipment, Type PH-253-C, manufactured in 1944 by The Morse Instrument Co., Hudson, Ohio.
This portable developing unit was specifically designed for 16mm and 35mm motion picture film, allowing the Signal Corps to process, develop, and view film in the field during World War II.
Features:
• Original Signal Corps data plate:
“Developing Equipment PH-253-C – Serial No. 475 – Contract AF-33(600)19717 – The Morse Instrument Co., Hudson Ohio”
• Stamped 1944: “Signal Corps U.S. Army – Phila. 44” on the body.

“Developer (16 & 35mm Film), Type PH-253-C, Spec. No. 75-244 Amend 2”
• Complete interior mechanism: twin film reels, turning handles, and guide system all intact.
• Inspection window and locking system still present and fully functional.
• Compact, rugged construction for field use by the Signal Corps.
Condition:
• Excellent preservation considering its age.
• Black finish remains intact with only minor wear.
• Internal reels and levers move freely.
• All original fittings, case hardware, and rubber feet are present.
• Comes in its original Signal Corps case with lid, latches, and stenciling.
Historical Significance:
Film was a vital tool for the U.S. Army during WWII. Units like the PH-253-C allowed Signal Corps technicians to quickly develop and review training films, reconnaissance footage, and propaganda reels right in the field. These portable developers were often paired with Signal Corps projectors such as the PH-222-A, making it possible to shoot, develop, and project film within hours.
Collectability & Value:
This equipment is far rarer than the projectors themselves and seldom appears on the collectors’ market. It is a must-have for advanced WWII Signal Corps, film, or communications collections.
