FOR SALE – Original WWII U.S. Army Duffel Bag – Named & Theater Marked – AFRICA / FRANCE
A truly exceptional and historically rich WWII U.S. Army barracks bag, named to Pvt. James B. Levers – ASN 19104157. This original olive drab canvas duffel is stencil-marked with the soldier’s full name and serial number, as well as the military ID number RE 7387-A.
What makes this duffel rare and highly desirable:
• Theater Stenciling: Bold red painted campaign markings reading “AFRICA” and “FRANCE” – likely applied post-campaign as a commemoration of overseas service. These markings suggest Levers served in the North African Campaign and later in the European Theater (France).
• Captured Symbolism: The red eagle emblem seen on the bag is believed to be a captured German symbol, likely taken as a trophy by U.S. troops and stenciled as a victory mark – a rare and evocative detail not often seen on GI-issued gear.
• Additional faded markings, including remnants of a U.S. flag and possibly unit transport codes (“8201 LF-R”).
• Original wartime stitching, rope closure with original metal grommets and hook, showing honest wear but structurally sound.
This duffel is not just a piece of gear – it’s a personal artifact that tells the journey of an American soldier from Africa to France during World War II.
