Probably the watch with the most impressive feature in horology, the Breitling Emergency was first released in 1995.

At a glance, the Emergency’s design seems fairly standard; a hybrid digital/analogue dial, rotating compass bezel and a rubberised strap make it look like many other adventure-oriented watches.

Where the Emergency is unique however is contained in the large second crown located at the bottom of the watch. It houses a personal beacon that when activated, broadcasts a distress signal on emergency radio channels so the wearer can be located by rescue services. Initially only offered to licenced pilots, the Emergency was later released to the general public and included an agreement that had to be signed by the wearer agreeing to cover the costs in the case of a false alarm.

The Emergency II was released in 2014 and improved on the original by adding a new digital emergency frequency to the beacon and a chronograph module. Considerably more expensive than its predecessor, the Emergency is a serious tool for serious adventurers and well worth the investment for those regularly putting themselves in perilous situations.

For those that just like the idea of having a distress beacon integrated into their watch, the original Emergency can be found for reasonable prices on the pre-owned market and may even save your life one day.
