For his fourth album, Wouter Hamel again chooses producer Benny Sings, with whom he has previously made two records. He also opts for a different sound. The jazzy singer / songwriter gives full throttle on Pompadour towards disco, soul and slick pop music that is not devoid of a good dose of extravaganza. Opener The Lights is exemplary for the rest of the record: a funky bass line carries the song, which also features MGMT-esque synthesizers, vocoders and a whole bunch of small electronics, beautifully woven by Benny Sings. The song is about a lost friend and the other songs are actually not as cheerful as they sound at first. Due to the exuberant production, many subtleties of Hamel's compositions are lost. On the other hand: we have known for a long time that he is an excellent composer with a good ear for catchy pop songs. It is therefore also very brave to step out of that comfort zone and make a record that will do well at an extravagant gay party in South Korea. Or at a neighborhood barbecue in Arnhem North, of course. Hamel can be anywhere. (HF)
