The Joy of thinking in math [2013-02-10]
I had Pedoe as a prof. at the University of Minnesota. His calm musings about mathematics in everyday life predate the wonderful books by John Allen Paulos and are easily as good. Each chapter presents a dissection of popular thinking on topics from randomness to topology. This book is available at a remarkably low price, well worth the full price.
One note. The binding is adequate at best. I have worked my copies hard and have just bought a third.

Dan Pedoe (29 October 1910, London - 27 October 1998, St Paul, Minnesota, USA) was an English-born mathematician and geometer with a career spanning more than sixty years. In the course of his life he wrote approximately fifty research and expository papers in geometry. He is also the author of various core books on mathematics and geometry some of which have remained in print for decades and been translated into several languages. These books include the three-volume Methods of Algebraic Geometry (which he wrote in collaboration with W. V. D. Hodge), The Gentle Art of Mathematics, Circles: A Mathematical View, Geometry and the Visual Arts and most recently Japanese Temple Geometry Problems: San Gaku (with Hidetoshi Fukagawa).
Early life
Daniel Pedoe was born in London in 1910, the youngest of thirteen children of Szmul Abramski, a Jewish immigrant from Poland who found himself in London in the 1890s: he had boarded a cattleboat not knowing whether it was bound for New York or London, so his final destination was one of blind chance. Pedoe's mother, Ryfka Raszka Pedowicz, was the only child of Wolf Pedowicz, a corn merchant and his wife, Sarah Haimnovna Pecheska from lomza then in Congress Poland (that part of Poland then under Russian control). The family name requires some explanation. The father, Abramski, was one of the Kohanim, a priestly group, and once in Britain, he changed his surname to Cohen. At first, all thirteen children took the surname Cohen, but later, to avoid any potential antisemitism, some of the Cohen children changed their surname to Pedoe, a contraction of their mother's maiden name; this happened while Daniel was at school, aged 12.
"Danny" was the youngest child in a family of thirteen children and his childhood was spent in relative poverty in the East End of London, despite their father being a skilled cabinetmaker. He attended the Central Foundation Boys' School where he was first influenced in his love of geometry by the headmaster Norman M. Gibbins and a textbook by Godfrey and Siddons. While still at school, Pedoe published his first paper, The geometric interpretation of Cagnoli's equation: sin b sin c + cos b cos c cos A = sin B sin C - cos B cos C cos a; it appeared in the Mathematical Gazette in 1929. He was successful at the "ten plus" examination and subsequently won a Scholarship to study mathematics at Cambridge University.
Cambridge and Princeton
During his first three years at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was a scholar, Pedoe was tutored in mathematics by Arthur Stanley Ramsey, the father of Frank P. Ramsey. He attended lectures by Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, although he was unimpressed by the teaching style of either great man. Geometry became his main interest and, advised by Henry Baker, he started work on his doctorate and published several papers. In 1935 he took a break from Cambridge and went to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton where he worked with Solomon Lefschetz.
University of Southampton and Freeman Dyson
On his return to England in 1936, Pedoe was appointed as an assistant lecturer of the mathematics department at the University College, Southampton. More of his papers were published and after(?) 1937, he was awarded his PhD on the strength of his thesis, The Exceptional Curves on an Algebraic Surface, which was based on Henry Baker's work on the Italian theory of algebraic surfaces; he was examined by W. V. D. Hodge and Baker at Cambridge.
In the late 1930s, Pedoe married Mary Tunstall, an English geographer and the couple had a daughter, Naomi, and identical twin sons, Dan and Hugh, born in December 1939.
By 1941, Winchester College had lost several teachers to the army and had become unable to meet its teaching commitments. They requested help and Pedoe was asked to assist with the teaching of mathematics. He taught junior and senior classes (the juniors could be unruly) and in the senior class one of the students was Freeman Dyson who showed enormous early talent and was strongly encouraged by Pedoe with extra work and reading. Their friendship lasted more than fifty more years until Pedoe's death in 1998 and Dyson's list of people who have most influenced him begins "Hardy, Pedoe...".
In 1941 a collaboration with W. V. D. Hodge started which lasted some twelve years and included the writing of the huge three-volume work, Methods of Algebraic Geometry. Although the book was originally designed as a geometric counterpart of G. H. Hardy's A Course of Pure Mathematics it was never intended as a textbook and contains original material. First published in the 1940s, all three volumes were reprinted by Cambridge University Press in 1995.
Pedoe published three more papers in 1942: A remark on a property of a special pencil of quadrics, On some geometrical inequalities and An inequality for two triangles.
Birmingham University and Westfield College
In 1942, Pedoe moved to Birmingham for a lectureship at the University of Birmingham, working mainly in engineering mathematics. The family were not happy there, the local air pollution affected his children and Pedoe did not like the working environment. The professor of mathematical physics at Birmingham was Rudolf Peierls, who was working on the British project to develop the atomic bomb; he suggested to Pedoe that he, Pedoe, should do some war-work. He did so, and worked part-time to improve piston rings so as to emulate German dive-bombing tactics.
In 1947 he moved to Westfield College, part of the University of London, as a reader in mathematics. Once again, he was unhappy, both from domestic and professional points of view: his salary was insufficient for him to afford to buy a family home and he found the working environment to be "a strain".
Khartoum and Singapore
Encouraged by Mary to look abroad, he was appointed as head of the mathematics department at the University of Khartoum in the Sudan and took up the role in 1952 on trial basis with leave of absence from Westfield College. When Westfield pressed for firm decision, he resigned and stayed at Khartoum for seven years: the length of his contract. It was during this period that he wrote many of his books including The Gentle Art of Mathematics, Circles and a textbook, An Introduction to projective geometry.
Pedoe found the time at Khartoum to his taste; there was a comfortable life-style that allowed him to write and the family joined him each Christmas. Eventually, Mary stayed with him permanently, the children remaining in England.
In 1959, he was appointed as head of the mathematics department at the University of Singapore by Sir Alexander Oppenheim.
Purdue and Minnesota
Unwilling to retire at 55, the statutory retirement age in Singapore, he moved again, to Indiana in 1962, to take up a position at Purdue University, near Lafayette. Although the location was somewhat isolated, there was an active social life and he was kept busy. One of the positions he held there was as Senior Mathematician to the Minnesota College Geometry Project, which was to improve geometry teaching in high schools and colleges by making films and writing accompanying books.
After two years at Purdue, he was appointed as a professor at the University of Minnesota where he stayed until he retired in 1980, when he was made professor emeritus. He won a Lester R. Ford Award in 1968.
San Gaku
Pedoe's interest and work continued after his retirement and in 1984 he was approached by Hidetoshi Fukagawa, a high-school teacher in Aichi, Japan. Fukagawa had tried unsuccessfully to interest Japanese academics in San Gaku - Japanese wooden tablets containing geometric theorems which had hung in temples and shrines for around two centuries as offerings to the gods.
A collaboration started which resulted in the publication of the book, Japanese Temple Geometry Problems by the Charles Babbage Research Centre in Canada. The book succeeded in arousing interest in this uniquely Japanese form of mathematics.
Death
Dan Pedoe died in 1998, aged 88, after a long period with failing health. He was survived by his twin sons, Dan and Hugh Tunstall-Pedoe, and six grandchildren.

Biography
Daniel Pedoe's name did not come from his father whose name was originally Szmul Abramski (1863-1942). However, it is not that simple; for his father, who was a Polish Jew from the priestly tribe of Kohanim, changed his name to Cohen when he arrived in Britain in the 1890s. He chose Cohen because he was from the Kohanim tribe and thought that Cohen would be an easier name for British people. He was a skilled cabinetmaker and, after arriving in England, lived in the East End of London. Daniel's mother, who was also from Poland, was the only daughter of the corn merchant Wolf Pedowicz and his wife Sarah Haimnovna Pecheska. She was born in Lomza in the Russian part of Poland. Her name was Ryfka Raszka Pedowicz (1865-1948) and, as we will explain in a moment, it was that name which eventually led to the subject of this biography being given the name Pedoe. This, however, came later and the family of thirteen children all started life with the name of Cohen. To make it easier to understand, we shall refer to the subject of this biography as Pedoe throughout, even during the years when his name was Cohen. Daniel was the youngest of the thirteen children and he had brothers and sisters who were adults when he was born. In [20] Pedoe explained that life was hard by modern standards:-
"Our three-story house had an outside toilet. There was no indoor tap when I was very young. I have a distinct memory of my mother doing the laundry in a large galvanized iron tub under the outside cold-water tap. We used the public baths, of course, and eventually we also used a commercial laundry. Gas light was eventually replaced with electricity, but this did not extend to the outside toilet, where a candle provided the only light."
Up to the age of eleven Pedoe attended the local primary school. There he met some geometry in drawing classes. He had [20]:-
"... a drawing lesson once a week. Before taking some students to a swimming class, the drawing master would set out an assortment of cones and cubes (I do not remember any spheres) for the rest of us to sketch. On his return, he would look through our drawings and cane on the hand any unsatisfactory artists. His criteria were never explained."
At the age of eleven he began his secondary school education at the Central Foundation Boys' School, in Cowper Street, London. This school had been founded in 1866 by the Reverend William Rogers who wanted to provide a good education for the sons of skilled workmen and tradesmen who could not afford high fees. When Pedoe studied there it was selective, only accepting boys with good academic standards, and was fee paying. The pupils, but not the teachers, were mostly Jewish. The headmaster was Norman Martin Gibbins (born 15 October 1882) who was a mathematician and had graduated as 12th Wrangler in the 1903 Cambridge mathematical tripos examinations. He was also a great enthusiast for chess and is remembered today for his paper Chess in Three and Four Dimensions published in The Mathematical Gazette in 1944. He was second master at the Central Foundation Boys' School 1912-1922 and headmaster 1922-1946. Pedoe writes [20]:-
"Gibbins, was a lover of geometry, particularly of conics. [He] had piercing eyes, and a bad stutter (which he seemed to ignore) added to the intensity of his speech. ... There was a concentration on mathematics at his school, but the arts and sciences were not neglected, and there was even woodwork for the junior classes. ... Gibbins was a good pianist and encouraged music at his school. ... The language instruction at Gibbins' school was especially good; I left there having enjoyed seven years of French and six of German."
Soon after beginning his secondary education his name was changed from Cohen to Pedoe. He explains how this came about in [20]:-
"My brother Arthur, who was about thirteen years my senior, first became a schoolmaster at a private grammar school, and then entered the actuarial profession, which involved passing rather difficult exams in probability and general law. He was very successful. His seniors knew his origin, but by changing his name from Abraham Cohen to Arthur Pedoe he avoided any awkward confrontation. With his fair, curly hair and blue eyes, Arthur could "pass" as a gentile. My slightly older brother Joe had red, curly hair and blue eyes, while I had fair hair and hazel eyes. I was sometimes smiled at by gentile neighbours as being "one of us," which hardly pleased my mother. ... Anyway, when I was twelve, Arthur changed Joe's name and mine to Pedoe, a contraction of our mother's name Pedowicz, to which he felt we had a right."
While a pupil at the Central Foundation Boys' School, Pedoe published his first paper The geometric interpretation of Cagnoli's equation:
sin b sin c + cos b cos c cos A = sin B sin C - cos B cos C cos a
which appeared in 1929 in the Mathematical Gazette. He used the following mathematics books as he prepared to sit the 1930 Cambridge Scholarship examination [19]:-
"C Smith, Algebra and Analytical Conics; Loney, Trigonometry, Parts I and II; Macaulay, Geometrical Conics; Loney, Statics and Dynamics (no calculus used); Edwards, Differential Calculus; Williamson, Integral Calculus; Besant, Hydrodynamics. He also read Casey, Sequel to Euclid; Chrystal, Algebra, Vol. II; Salmon, Conic Sections; Hobson, Trigonometry; Burnside and Panton, Theory of Equations; Routh, Dynamics of a Particle and Rigid Bodies; Minchin, Statics, including Theory of Attractions."
Pedoe matriculated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 1930. There his tutor was Arthur Stanley Ramsey, the father of Frank Ramsey. Arthur Ramsey was not only a mathematics tutor, for he was President of Magdalene College. Pedoe attended lectures by Ludwig Wittgenstein [20]:-
"I tried to attend his lectures, but sitting uncomfortably on canvas chairs in a small room as Ludwig walked up and down wrestling with his thoughts, producing words at the rate of fewer than one per minute - all this was too much for me."
He attended lectures by Bertrand Russell:-
"Russell's lectures had an unusual characteristic: they were deliberately fabricated to repel students."
His main interest, however, was in geometry. He attended Henry Baker's lectures on Italian algebraic geometry and began working towards his doctorate advised by Baker, publishing the papers An extension of a fundamental theorem in the theory of surfaces (1934), On the virtual grade of curves on an algebraic surface (1935) and On a class of irregular surfaces (1935) on this topic. He had also read van der Waerden's papers on the algebraic foundations of algebraic geometry.
Feeling he needed a break from the Cambridge atmosphere, he made arrangements in 1935 to visit the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton where he worked with Solomon Lefschetz. Returning to England in 1936 he was appointed as an assistant lecturer at the University of Southampton. In 1937 his papers On the canonical systems of certain algebraic surfaces and On the representation of circles by means of points in space of three dimensions were published. He submitted his thesis The Exceptional Curves On An Algebraic Surface to the University of Cambridge and, after being examined by Henry Baker and William Hodge, he was awarded his Ph.D. Around this time Pedoe married the geographer Mary Tunstall; their first child was a daughter Naomi, followed by twin sons Dan and Hugh, born on 30 December 1939. By this time World War II had begun and his next paper Some properties of the paraboloid z=x2+y2z=x2+y2 (1939) had been published in the Edinburgh Mathematical Notes.
In 1941 the famous independent school Winchester College was struggling to carry out its teaching obligations since many of its masters had been drafted into the army. The mathematics master at Winchester, Clement Vavasor Durell, wrote to the University of Southampton asking if they had any members of staff who could help them out and Pedoe, being the most junior member of Southampton's Mathematics department, was asked to go to Winchester on one day each week to teach there. At Winchester, he taught Freeman Dyson:-
"I taught a junior class of twelve-year-olds at Winchester as well as the top class, where one of the students was young Freeman Dyson. I was not asked to teach Dyson's class geometry, but just to continue with a set of problems on infinite series. In Southampton, my university class could do about six problems for each homework, but Dyson's class turned in thirty or forty! I found the junior class rather difficult and noisy. Once, after I had been up all night in an air raid, I appealed to them to make less noise. They calmed down for about five minutes."
In 1941 Pedoe began his collaboration with William Hodge on the famous three volume book Methods of algebraic geometry. It was a letter from Hodge to Pedoe which began this collaboration and we give this letter at THIS LINK.

In 1942 three further papers by Pedoe appeared: A remark on a property of a special pencil of quadrics; On some geometrical inequalities; and An inequality for two triangles. In that year he moved from Southampton to Birmingham to take up a lectureship at the university. There his teaching was mainly to engineering students:-
"We found Birmingham a grim place after Southampton. There seemed to be a fine, damp soot in the air most of the time, which did not suit our children. The University consisted of pretentious buildings, bitterly cold in the winter, and the head of the mathematics department, G N Watson, took pleasure in behaving eccentrically. We had no mathematics seminars, and I never heard Watson lecture."
The professor of mathematical physics at Birmingham was Rudolf Peierls who, at this time, was working on the theoretical side of the British project to develop an atomic bomb. He suggested to Pedoe that he should contribute to the war effort and Pedoe was enlisted to work part-time on the improvement of piston rings.
In 1947 Pedoe moved to Westfield College, part of the University of London, where he became a reader in mathematics. However, his income was not sufficient to allow him to make a deposit for a house of his own so he and his family had to live in lodgings on the Finchley Road. He also found that the "Westfield College atmosphere was a strain" so, encouraged by his wife who as a professional geographer had long wanted to visit Egypt and Africa, he applied for the position of head of the mathematics department at the University of Khartoum. He was given leave from Westfield to try out this new appointment which he took up in 1952. After a few months, Westfield demanded that he make a decision whether he wanted to return to his post there and, after thinking through the rather difficult decision, he decided to remain in Khartoum and resign his Westfield appointment. Pedoe spent the next seven years in Khartoum.
Part of his conditions of the appointment to Khartoum was that his family would be flown out from London at the University of Khartoum's expense to spend time with him every Christmas:-
"At Christmas, my family left the pea-soup December fogs of London and entered a land of perfect weather, with twelve hours of sunshine every day, cool nights, excellent servants in spotless white robes, no food rationing (unlike Britain), a swim every afternoon, and the undoubted romance of being on the Nile."
After a few years his wife decided to remain permanently with him in Khartoum although his children remained in England:-
"For much of the year one slept outdoors. I would be awakened soon after sunrise by my servant Daoud gently pressing the big toe of my right foot before placing my tea on the bedside table. I would drink my tea, shower, eat a good breakfast, and settle down to writing books on my Olivetti typewriter. At noon, a trip to the Sudan Club, a swim, a beer, and back for lunch and siesta. It was a good life."
While he was in Khartoum, he wrote the two books Circles (1957) and The Gentle Art of Mathematics (1959). For extracts from some reviews of these books see THIS LINK.
He left Khartoum in 1959 when he was appointed as head of the mathematics department at the University of Singapore. The retirement age in Singapore was 55 so, after a few years, Pedoe realised that he was approaching that age yet had no wish to retire. The situation was solved with an offer from Purdue University in Indiana. He took up the appointment there in 1962 [20]:-
"Purdue was very cut off from the rest of Indiana. The nearest small town, Lafayette, had one cinema and one bar. The mathematics faculty entertained each other a great deal, and the atmosphere was a friendly one. I made some good friends .... I was in demand for lectures, and I was also asked to join the Minnesota College Geometry Project as a Senior Mathematician, the other being Donald Coxeter. The idea of the project, which was funded by the National Science Foundation, was to improve geometry teaching in high schools and colleges, by making films on geometry and writing an accompanying textbook. So I began writing scripts."
While at Purdue, he published two books, An Introduction to Projective Geometry (1963) and A Geometric Introduction to Linear Algebra (1963). For extracts from some reviews of these books see THIS LINK.
After spending two years at Purdue University, he was appointed to the University of Minnesota. Here he continued to write excellent books, the first being A Course of Geometry for Colleges and Universities (1970) which was republished as Geometry: A Comprehensive Course (1988). Pedoe continued to work at the University of Minnesota until he retired in 1981. At this time he was made Professor Emeritus. It was after he retired that he published the book Japanese Temple Geometry Problems (1989) written jointly with Fukagawa Hidetosi. We mentioned above that Pedoe taught Freeman Dyson at Winchester College. Dyson wrote a preface to Fukagawa Hidetoshi and Tony Rothman's book Sacred Mathematics: Japanese Temple geometry [11] in which he writes about Pedoe:-
"Daniel Pedoe was my teacher when I was studying mathematics as a boy in an English high-school long ago. He gave me my first taste of mathematical research, asking me to work out a mapping of the circles in a Euclidean plane onto the points of a three-dimensional Euclidean space. I found the mapping, and my eyes were opened to the power and beauty of geometry. Many of the properties of circles became intuitively obvious when I looked at the map. Later, I renewed my friendship with Pedoe after we both moved to America. Forty years later, Pedoe discovered 'sangaku'. He was then a professor of mathematics in Minnesota, and there he received a letter from Fukagawa. Fukagawa had written to six mathematicians known to be interested in geometry, informing them of the existence of 'sangaku' and inviting them to collaborate in making 'sangaku' known to the world outside Japan. Pedoe was the only one of the six who answered. He agreed to collaborate with Fukagawa in producing the book 'Japanese Temple Geometry Problems', which was published in English in 1989 by the Babbage Institute in Winnipeg, Canada. Pedoe paid for Fukagawa and his wife to come to Minnesota to work on the book, and he also visited Fukagawa in Japan. He remained a close friend of Fukagawa's and a promoter of 'sangaku' until his death in 1998."
In fact Fukagawa Hidetoshi dedicated the book
"To the Memory of Dan Pedoe
Who first introduced sangaku to the world."
Among the honours that Pedoe received we mention the Senior Fulbright Fellowship he was awarded which enabled him to visit Australia and the Mathematical Association of America's Lester Ford Award which he received in 1968. Among his hobbies we must mention that he was an excellent painter in oils and his work was exhibited in several exhibitions. He died of pneumonia at the age of 87, two days before his 88th birthday.
Finally let us say a little about Pedoe's twin sons Dan Tunstall Pedoe and Hugh Tunstall Pedoe. Dan studied at Cambridge and Oxford becoming a cardiologist and leading expert on sports medicine. He was the founding chief medical officer of the London marathon, being the medical director of the marathon for 25 years. He died of a heart attack in London on 13 February 2015 at the age of 75. Hugh also trained in medicine and cardiology and worked for 34 years for the World Health Organisation. He became Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the University of Dundee, Scotland, in 1981 where he is now professor emeritus.

Dan Pedoe (29 October 1910, London - 27 October 1998, St Paul, Minnesota, USA) was an English-born mathematician and geometer with a career spanning more than sixty years. In the course of his life he wrote approximately fifty research and expository papers in geometry. He is also the author of various core books on mathematics and geometry some of which have remained in print for decades and been translated into several languages. These books include the three-volume Methods of Algebraic Geometry (which he wrote in collaboration with W. V. D. Hodge), The Gentle Art of Mathematics, Circles: A Mathematical View, Geometry and the Visual Arts and most recently Japanese Temple Geometry Problems: San Gaku (with Hidetoshi Fukagawa).
Early life
Daniel Pedoe was born in London in 1910, the youngest of thirteen children of Szmul Abramski, a Jewish immigrant from Poland who found himself in London in the 1890s: he had boarded a cattleboat not knowing whether it was bound for New York or London, so his final destination was one of blind chance. Pedoe's mother, Ryfka Raszka Pedowicz, was the only child of Wolf Pedowicz, a corn merchant and his wife, Sarah Haimnovna Pecheska from lomza then in Congress Poland (that part of Poland then under Russian control). The family name requires some explanation. The father, Abramski, was one of the Kohanim, a priestly group, and once in Britain, he changed his surname to Cohen. At first, all thirteen children took the surname Cohen, but later, to avoid any potential antisemitism, some of the Cohen children changed their surname to Pedoe, a contraction of their mother's maiden name; this happened while Daniel was at school, aged 12.
"Danny" was the youngest child in a family of thirteen children and his childhood was spent in relative poverty in the East End of London, despite their father being a skilled cabinetmaker. He attended the Central Foundation Boys' School where he was first influenced in his love of geometry by the headmaster Norman M. Gibbins and a textbook by Godfrey and Siddons. While still at school, Pedoe published his first paper, The geometric interpretation of Cagnoli's equation: sin b sin c + cos b cos c cos A = sin B sin C - cos B cos C cos a; it appeared in the Mathematical Gazette in 1929. He was successful at the "ten plus" examination and subsequently won a Scholarship to study mathematics at Cambridge University.
Cambridge and Princeton
During his first three years at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was a scholar, Pedoe was tutored in mathematics by Arthur Stanley Ramsey, the father of Frank P. Ramsey. He attended lectures by Ludwig Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell, although he was unimpressed by the teaching style of either great man. Geometry became his main interest and, advised by Henry Baker, he started work on his doctorate and published several papers. In 1935 he took a break from Cambridge and went to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton where he worked with Solomon Lefschetz.
University of Southampton and Freeman Dyson
On his return to England in 1936, Pedoe was appointed as an assistant lecturer of the mathematics department at the University College, Southampton. More of his papers were published and after(?) 1937, he was awarded his PhD on the strength of his thesis, The Exceptional Curves on an Algebraic Surface, which was based on Henry Baker's work on the Italian theory of algebraic surfaces; he was examined by W. V. D. Hodge and Baker at Cambridge.
In the late 1930s, Pedoe married Mary Tunstall, an English geographer and the couple had a daughter, Naomi, and identical twin sons, Dan and Hugh, born in December 1939.
By 1941, Winchester College had lost several teachers to the army and had become unable to meet its teaching commitments. They requested help and Pedoe was asked to assist with the teaching of mathematics. He taught junior and senior classes (the juniors could be unruly) and in the senior class one of the students was Freeman Dyson who showed enormous early talent and was strongly encouraged by Pedoe with extra work and reading. Their friendship lasted more than fifty more years until Pedoe's death in 1998 and Dyson's list of people who have most influenced him begins "Hardy, Pedoe...".
In 1941 a collaboration with W. V. D. Hodge started which lasted some twelve years and included the writing of the huge three-volume work, Methods of Algebraic Geometry. Although the book was originally designed as a geometric counterpart of G. H. Hardy's A Course of Pure Mathematics it was never intended as a textbook and contains original material. First published in the 1940s, all three volumes were reprinted by Cambridge University Press in 1995.
Pedoe published three more papers in 1942: A remark on a property of a special pencil of quadrics, On some geometrical inequalities and An inequality for two triangles.
Birmingham University and Westfield College
In 1942, Pedoe moved to Birmingham for a lectureship at the University of Birmingham, working mainly in engineering mathematics. The family were not happy there, the local air pollution affected his children and Pedoe did not like the working environment. The professor of mathematical physics at Birmingham was Rudolf Peierls, who was working on the British project to develop the atomic bomb; he suggested to Pedoe that he, Pedoe, should do some war-work. He did so, and worked part-time to improve piston rings so as to emulate German dive-bombing tactics.
In 1947 he moved to Westfield College, part of the University of London, as a reader in mathematics. Once again, he was unhappy, both from domestic and professional points of view: his salary was insufficient for him to afford to buy a family home and he found the working environment to be "a strain".
Khartoum and Singapore
Encouraged by Mary to look abroad, he was appointed as head of the mathematics department at the University of Khartoum in the Sudan and took up the role in 1952 on trial basis with leave of absence from Westfield College. When Westfield pressed for firm decision, he resigned and stayed at Khartoum for seven years: the length of his contract. It was during this period that he wrote many of his books including The Gentle Art of Mathematics, Circles and a textbook, An Introduction to projective geometry.
Pedoe found the time at Khartoum to his taste; there was a comfortable life-style that allowed him to write and the family joined him each Christmas. Eventually, Mary stayed with him permanently, the children remaining in England.
In 1959, he was appointed as head of the mathematics department at the University of Singapore by Sir Alexander Oppenheim.
Purdue and Minnesota
Unwilling to retire at 55, the statutory retirement age in Singapore, he moved again, to Indiana in 1962, to take up a position at Purdue University, near Lafayette. Although the location was somewhat isolated, there was an active social life and he was kept busy. One of the positions he held there was as Senior Mathematician to the Minnesota College Geometry Project, which was to improve geometry teaching in high schools and colleges by making films and writing accompanying books.
After two years at Purdue, he was appointed as a professor at the University of Minnesota where he stayed until he retired in 1980, when he was made professor emeritus. He won a Lester R. Ford Award in 1968.
San Gaku
Pedoe's interest and work continued after his retirement and in 1984 he was approached by Hidetoshi Fukagawa, a high-school teacher in Aichi, Japan. Fukagawa had tried unsuccessfully to interest Japanese academics in San Gaku - Japanese wooden tablets containing geometric theorems which had hung in temples and shrines for around two centuries as offerings to the gods.
A collaboration started which resulted in the publication of the book, Japanese Temple Geometry Problems by the Charles Babbage Research Centre in Canada. The book succeeded in arousing interest in this uniquely Japanese form of mathematics.
Death
Dan Pedoe died in 1998, aged 88, after a long period with failing health. He was survived by his twin sons, Dan and Hugh Tunstall-Pedoe, and six grandchildren.

Biography
Daniel Pedoe's name did not come from his father whose name was originally Szmul Abramski (1863-1942). However, it is not that simple; for his father, who was a Polish Jew from the priestly tribe of Kohanim, changed his name to Cohen when he arrived in Britain in the 1890s. He chose Cohen because he was from the Kohanim tribe and thought that Cohen would be an easier name for British people. He was a skilled cabinetmaker and, after arriving in England, lived in the East End of London. Daniel's mother, who was also from Poland, was the only daughter of the corn merchant Wolf Pedowicz and his wife Sarah Haimnovna Pecheska. She was born in Lomza in the Russian part of Poland. Her name was Ryfka Raszka Pedowicz (1865-1948) and, as we will explain in a moment, it was that name which eventually led to the subject of this biography being given the name Pedoe. This, however, came later and the family of thirteen children all started life with the name of Cohen. To make it easier to understand, we shall refer to the subject of this biography as Pedoe throughout, even during the years when his name was Cohen. Daniel was the youngest of the thirteen children and he had brothers and sisters who were adults when he was born. In [20] Pedoe explained that life was hard by modern standards:-
"Our three-story house had an outside toilet. There was no indoor tap when I was very young. I have a distinct memory of my mother doing the laundry in a large galvanized iron tub under the outside cold-water tap. We used the public baths, of course, and eventually we also used a commercial laundry. Gas light was eventually replaced with electricity, but this did not extend to the outside toilet, where a candle provided the only light."
Up to the age of eleven Pedoe attended the local primary school. There he met some geometry in drawing classes. He had [20]:-
"... a drawing lesson once a week. Before taking some students to a swimming class, the drawing master would set out an assortment of cones and cubes (I do not remember any spheres) for the rest of us to sketch. On his return, he would look through our drawings and cane on the hand any unsatisfactory artists. His criteria were never explained."
At the age of eleven he began his secondary school education at the Central Foundation Boys' School, in Cowper Street, London. This school had been founded in 1866 by the Reverend William Rogers who wanted to provide a good education for the sons of skilled workmen and tradesmen who could not afford high fees. When Pedoe studied there it was selective, only accepting boys with good academic standards, and was fee paying. The pupils, but not the teachers, were mostly Jewish. The headmaster was Norman Martin Gibbins (born 15 October 1882) who was a mathematician and had graduated as 12th Wrangler in the 1903 Cambridge mathematical tripos examinations. He was also a great enthusiast for chess and is remembered today for his paper Chess in Three and Four Dimensions published in The Mathematical Gazette in 1944. He was second master at the Central Foundation Boys' School 1912-1922 and headmaster 1922-1946. Pedoe writes [20]:-
"Gibbins, was a lover of geometry, particularly of conics. [He] had piercing eyes, and a bad stutter (which he seemed to ignore) added to the intensity of his speech. ... There was a concentration on mathematics at his school, but the arts and sciences were not neglected, and there was even woodwork for the junior classes. ... Gibbins was a good pianist and encouraged music at his school. ... The language instruction at Gibbins' school was especially good; I left there having enjoyed seven years of French and six of German."
Soon after beginning his secondary education his name was changed from Cohen to Pedoe. He explains how this came about in [20]:-
"My brother Arthur, who was about thirteen years my senior, first became a schoolmaster at a private grammar school, and then entered the actuarial profession, which involved passing rather difficult exams in probability and general law. He was very successful. His seniors knew his origin, but by changing his name from Abraham Cohen to Arthur Pedoe he avoided any awkward confrontation. With his fair, curly hair and blue eyes, Arthur could "pass" as a gentile. My slightly older brother Joe had red, curly hair and blue eyes, while I had fair hair and hazel eyes. I was sometimes smiled at by gentile neighbours as being "one of us," which hardly pleased my mother. ... Anyway, when I was twelve, Arthur changed Joe's name and mine to Pedoe, a contraction of our mother's name Pedowicz, to which he felt we had a right."
While a pupil at the Central Foundation Boys' School, Pedoe published his first paper The geometric interpretation of Cagnoli's equation:

which appeared in 1929 in the Mathematical Gazette. He used the following mathematics books as he prepared to sit the 1930 Cambridge Scholarship examination [19]:-
"C Smith, Algebra and Analytical Conics; Loney, Trigonometry, Parts I and II; Macaulay, Geometrical Conics; Loney, Statics and Dynamics (no calculus used); Edwards, Differential Calculus; Williamson, Integral Calculus; Besant, Hydrodynamics. He also read Casey, Sequel to Euclid; Chrystal, Algebra, Vol. II; Salmon, Conic Sections; Hobson, Trigonometry; Burnside and Panton, Theory of Equations; Routh, Dynamics of a Particle and Rigid Bodies; Minchin, Statics, including Theory of Attractions."
Pedoe matriculated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, in 1930. There his tutor was Arthur Stanley Ramsey, the father of Frank Ramsey. Arthur Ramsey was not only a mathematics tutor, for he was President of Magdalene College. Pedoe attended lectures by Ludwig Wittgenstein [20]:-
"I tried to attend his lectures, but sitting uncomfortably on canvas chairs in a small room as Ludwig walked up and down wrestling with his thoughts, producing words at the rate of fewer than one per minute - all this was too much for me."
He attended lectures by Bertrand Russell:-
"Russell's lectures had an unusual characteristic: they were deliberately fabricated to repel students."
His main interest, however, was in geometry. He attended Henry Baker's lectures on Italian algebraic geometry and began working towards his doctorate advised by Baker, publishing the papers An extension of a fundamental theorem in the theory of surfaces (1934), On the virtual grade of curves on an algebraic surface (1935) and On a class of irregular surfaces (1935) on this topic. He had also read van der Waerden's papers on the algebraic foundations of algebraic geometry.
Feeling he needed a break from the Cambridge atmosphere, he made arrangements in 1935 to visit the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton where he worked with Solomon Lefschetz. Returning to England in 1936 he was appointed as an assistant lecturer at the University of Southampton. In 1937 his papers On the canonical systems of certain algebraic surfaces and On the representation of circles by means of points in space of three dimensions were published. He submitted his thesis The Exceptional Curves On An Algebraic Surface to the University of Cambridge and, after being examined by Henry Baker and William Hodge, he was awarded his Ph.D. Around this time Pedoe married the geographer Mary Tunstall; their first child was a daughter Naomi, followed by twin sons Dan and Hugh, born on 30 December 1939. By this time World War II had begun and his next paper Some properties of the paraboloid z=x2+y2z=x2+y2 (1939) had been published in the Edinburgh Mathematical Notes.
In 1941 the famous independent school Winchester College was struggling to carry out its teaching obligations since many of its masters had been drafted into the army. The mathematics master at Winchester, Clement Vavasor Durell, wrote to the University of Southampton asking if they had any members of staff who could help them out and Pedoe, being the most junior member of Southampton's Mathematics department, was asked to go to Winchester on one day each week to teach there. At Winchester, he taught Freeman Dyson:-
"I taught a junior class of twelve-year-olds at Winchester as well as the top class, where one of the students was young Freeman Dyson. I was not asked to teach Dyson's class geometry, but just to continue with a set of problems on infinite series. In Southampton, my university class could do about six problems for each homework, but Dyson's class turned in thirty or forty! I found the junior class rather difficult and noisy. Once, after I had been up all night in an air raid, I appealed to them to make less noise. They calmed down for about five minutes."
In 1941 Pedoe began his collaboration with William Hodge on the famous three volume book Methods of algebraic geometry. It was a letter from Hodge to Pedoe which began this collaboration and we give this letter at THIS LINK.

In 1942 three further papers by Pedoe appeared: A remark on a property of a special pencil of quadrics; On some geometrical inequalities; and An inequality for two triangles. In that year he moved from Southampton to Birmingham to take up a lectureship at the university. There his teaching was mainly to engineering students:-
"We found Birmingham a grim place after Southampton. There seemed to be a fine, damp soot in the air most of the time, which did not suit our children. The University consisted of pretentious buildings, bitterly cold in the winter, and the head of the mathematics department, G N Watson, took pleasure in behaving eccentrically. We had no mathematics seminars, and I never heard Watson lecture."
The professor of mathematical physics at Birmingham was Rudolf Peierls who, at this time, was working on the theoretical side of the British project to develop an atomic bomb. He suggested to Pedoe that he should contribute to the war effort and Pedoe was enlisted to work part-time on the improvement of piston rings.
In 1947 Pedoe moved to Westfield College, part of the University of London, where he became a reader in mathematics. However, his income was not sufficient to allow him to make a deposit for a house of his own so he and his family had to live in lodgings on the Finchley Road. He also found that the "Westfield College atmosphere was a strain" so, encouraged by his wife who as a professional geographer had long wanted to visit Egypt and Africa, he applied for the position of head of the mathematics department at the University of Khartoum. He was given leave from Westfield to try out this new appointment which he took up in 1952. After a few months, Westfield demanded that he make a decision whether he wanted to return to his post there and, after thinking through the rather difficult decision, he decided to remain in Khartoum and resign his Westfield appointment. Pedoe spent the next seven years in Khartoum.
Part of his conditions of the appointment to Khartoum was that his family would be flown out from London at the University of Khartoum's expense to spend time with him every Christmas:-
"At Christmas, my family left the pea-soup December fogs of London and entered a land of perfect weather, with twelve hours of sunshine every day, cool nights, excellent servants in spotless white robes, no food rationing (unlike Britain), a swim every afternoon, and the undoubted romance of being on the Nile."
After a few years his wife decided to remain permanently with him in Khartoum although his children remained in England:-
"For much of the year one slept outdoors. I would be awakened soon after sunrise by my servant Daoud gently pressing the big toe of my right foot before placing my tea on the bedside table. I would drink my tea, shower, eat a good breakfast, and settle down to writing books on my Olivetti typewriter. At noon, a trip to the Sudan Club, a swim, a beer, and back for lunch and siesta. It was a good life."

He left Khartoum in 1959 when he was appointed as head of the mathematics department at the University of Singapore. The retirement age in Singapore was 55 so, after a few years, Pedoe realised that he was approaching that age yet had no wish to retire. The situation was solved with an offer from Purdue University in Indiana. He took up the appointment there in 1962 [20]:-
"Purdue was very cut off from the rest of Indiana. The nearest small town, Lafayette, had one cinema and one bar. The mathematics faculty entertained each other a great deal, and the atmosphere was a friendly one. I made some good friends .... I was in demand for lectures, and I was also asked to join the Minnesota College Geometry Project as a Senior Mathematician, the other being Donald Coxeter. The idea of the project, which was funded by the National Science Foundation, was to improve geometry teaching in high schools and colleges, by making films on geometry and writing an accompanying textbook. So I began writing scripts."
While at Purdue, he published two books, An Introduction to Projective Geometry (1963) and A Geometric Introduction to Linear Algebra (1963). For extracts from some reviews of these books see THIS LINK.
After spending two years at Purdue University, he was appointed to the University of Minnesota. Here he continued to write excellent books, the first being A Course of Geometry for Colleges and Universities (1970) which was republished as Geometry: A Comprehensive Course (1988). Pedoe continued to work at the University of Minnesota until he retired in 1981. At this time he was made Professor Emeritus. It was after he retired that he published the book Japanese Temple Geometry Problems (1989) written jointly with Fukagawa Hidetosi. We mentioned above that Pedoe taught Freeman Dyson at Winchester College. Dyson wrote a preface to Fukagawa Hidetoshi and Tony Rothman's book Sacred Mathematics: Japanese Temple geometry [11] in which he writes about Pedoe:-
"Daniel Pedoe was my teacher when I was studying mathematics as a boy in an English high-school long ago. He gave me my first taste of mathematical research, asking me to work out a mapping of the circles in a Euclidean plane onto the points of a three-dimensional Euclidean space. I found the mapping, and my eyes were opened to the power and beauty of geometry. Many of the properties of circles became intuitively obvious when I looked at the map. Later, I renewed my friendship with Pedoe after we both moved to America. Forty years later, Pedoe discovered 'sangaku'. He was then a professor of mathematics in Minnesota, and there he received a letter from Fukagawa. Fukagawa had written to six mathematicians known to be interested in geometry, informing them of the existence of 'sangaku' and inviting them to collaborate in making 'sangaku' known to the world outside Japan. Pedoe was the only one of the six who answered. He agreed to collaborate with Fukagawa in producing the book 'Japanese Temple Geometry Problems', which was published in English in 1989 by the Babbage Institute in Winnipeg, Canada. Pedoe paid for Fukagawa and his wife to come to Minnesota to work on the book, and he also visited Fukagawa in Japan. He remained a close friend of Fukagawa's and a promoter of 'sangaku' until his death in 1998."
In fact Fukagawa Hidetoshi dedicated the book
"To the Memory of Dan Pedoe
Who first introduced sangaku to the world."
Among the honours that Pedoe received we mention the Senior Fulbright Fellowship he was awarded which enabled him to visit Australia and the Mathematical Association of America's Lester Ford Award which he received in 1968. Among his hobbies we must mention that he was an excellent painter in oils and his work was exhibited in several exhibitions. He died of pneumonia at the age of 87, two days before his 88th birthday.
Finally let us say a little about Pedoe's twin sons Dan Tunstall Pedoe and Hugh Tunstall Pedoe. Dan studied at Cambridge and Oxford becoming a cardiologist and leading expert on sports medicine. He was the founding chief medical officer of the London marathon, being the medical director of the marathon for 25 years. He died of a heart attack in London on 13 February 2015 at the age of 75. Hugh also trained in medicine and cardiology and worked for 34 years for the World Health Organisation. He became Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology at the University of Dundee, Scotland, in 1981 where he is now professor emeritus.
