FOR MILLIONS Ol YEARS, the wild animals of Fr America have been fitting themselves into every available nook and cranny of the landscape. About ten thousand years ago, humans became part of the equation and ever since have sometimes used, sometimes abused, but always admired the magnificent animals wich which they share the continent. Wildlife of North America celebrates the diversity and durability of the nearly 500 species of mammals that, along with countless birds, reptiles, and amphibians, move continually at the edges of our civilized, urban consciousness, inviting us to ponder in fresh ways the marvels of life on Earth. Six lavishly illustrated chapters display the rich diversity of animal life as it has adapted to the major landforms of the continent, from the harsh frozen tundra of the far north to the searing deserts of the southwest. More than 100 spectacular images, captured by the best wildlife photographers in the world, document the survival strategies used by animals ranging in size from the less-than-an-ounce deer mouse to the two-hundred-ton blue whale.

While exploring the multilayered haven of the vast continental forests, discover that one of the most familiar and appealing of its denizens, the white-tailed deer, embodies a profound evolutionary mystery. On rugged mountain heights, encounter one of the world’s most highly developed predators—the cougar, capable of catching and killing an elk five times ies weight. Marvel at the grizzly bear, who must sustain its thousand-pound bulk with ninety pounds of food every day. In the vast prairie grasslands, learn about a complex partnership struck cons ago between the perky little prairie dog and the mammoth bison. At the edges of the great oceans, examine families of animal contrarians—seals and whales that long ago emerged from the primordial sea, adapted to life on land, and then evolved to live again in their original marine environment. Admire eagles in flight and learn about their remarkable bifocal system thar allows them to hone in on their prey from a thousand feet in the air and then inspect that prey at talon’s length. There is much to learn from the stunning variety of wild animals to be encountered within the pages of Wildhfe of North America. It is an invitation to confront the beauty and wildness of natural creatures, and to reconsider what their presence means. Through the lenses af these gifted photographers we can see, if we look thoughtfully, à much larger picture of a web of life that embraces us all. Thomas A. Lewis lives in Winchester, Virginia. He has written three books on the Civil War, and is a regular contributor to National Wildlife and International Wildlife magazines. FRONT COVER: Mountain lion stalks its prey.
