Van Dyck was born in 'Den Berendans' on the current Groenplaats in Antwerp. He was the seventh child of twelve of the wealthy textile merchant Francois van Dyck and Maria Cuypers. The family consisted of four boys and eight girls, three of whom died young. Catharina, Maria, Cornelia II and Francois Jr. were older than Antoon. After him came Susanna, Anna, Dierick and Elisabeth or Isabella. In 1599 they moved from the Grote Markt to the Korte Nieuwstraat, where the adjacent building 'De Stadt van Gendt' was also purchased on 7 March 1607. Antoon's mother, however, died a month later, on April 17, 1607. From December 1610 there were problems, a private matter: the Hondschoot Jacobmyne de Kueck had to be banned from the city, after having smashed windows and having threatened Francois van Dyck with death. Anton's older sisters Catharina and Maria were married in 1610 and 1615 respectively, and from the summer of 1615 Franchois's business declined. His sons-in-law took him to court in July 1615. His estate was inventoried and sold. Antoon defended himself against his brothers-in-law. The flourishing merchant family had become a motherless family with serious problems. Possibly the family members were no longer 'socially attractive candidates on the Antwerp marriage market' and therefore Susanna, Isabella and Cornelia became beguines, Anna nun and Dierick canon. The parental home, 'De Stadt van Gendt', was forcibly sold on 20 May 1620. Around 1620 Francois van Dyck's family was 'socially stigmatized' and only Antoon could save the good name of the family.
