Je kan bieden op een Engelstalige Graphic Novel:  Escape from "special" van Miss Lasko-Gross.

The willful and perceptive Melissa deals with the whims of her peripatetic parents, her uneasy relationship with her therapist, and the rejection of her peers by watching horror movies, psychosomatically vomiting, and creating comics, in a semi-autobiographical, debut graphic novel that unfolds in series of brief anecdotes.

There are traditional medium artists that become comic book artists, who create beautifully executed works (see last post). Lasko-Gross comes from another school – those artists whose comic drawing grows out of doodling and a need to escape. Their works have an individual style that can only evolve of its own accord. Lasko-Gross’s book is a unique piece about a unique childhood and the style reflects the content .
Lasko-Gross’s childhood is ripe with stories. Raised by hippy, leftie, Jewish parents who take their independent and intelligent daughter on tour with their folk band, take her from mainstream school to alternative school and back again, and let her watch gory films. Lasko-Gross is burdened with intelligence and social anxiety that leaves her ostracized by class mates. She has a morbid fascination with horror films and a youthful passion for justice. Her position as social outsider gives her the perspective and a kind of observer status that lends itself to the role of comic writer.
This is a coming of age comic with spunk and independence in the face of conformity, its not angsty or self-indulgent. The style is one of kind.
