- Ignatius Frederick "Ian" Clarke (1918–2009) was a British scholar and professor of English, known for his work on science fiction as a bibliographer, historian and editor, and also, with his wife Margaret, as a translator of early French science fiction.
Some protagonists in the book:
- Robert Owen (1771–1858) was a Welsh social reformer. He is considered the founder of the co-operative movement and British socialism. Owen was the first to advocate the introduction of the eight-hour working day. The oldest known use of the word socialist is found in the Owenite newspaper The Co-operative Magazine from 1827.
- Daniel O'Connell (1775–1847), hailed in his time as The Liberator, was the acknowledged political leader of Ireland's Roman Catholic majority in the first half of the 19th century. His mobilization of Catholic Ireland, down to the poorest class of tenant farmers, secured the final installment of Catholic emancipation in 1829 and allowed him to take a seat in the United Kingdom Parliament to which he had been twice elected.
- Feargus Edward O'Connor 1796–1855) was an Irish Chartist leader and advocate of the Land Plan, which sought to provide small holdings for the laboring classes.
- Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812—1870) was one of the most important English writers of the Victorian era and the first literary chronicler of the big city in the middle of the Industrial Revolution.
- John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) was an English philosopher, political economist, politician and civil servant. One of the most influential thinkers in the history of classical liberalism, he contributed widely to social theory, political theory, and political economy.
- Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky (1821–1881), sometimes transliterated as Dostoyevsky, was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist and journalist. Numerous literary critics regard him as one of the greatest novelists in all of world literature, as many of his works are considered highly influential masterpieces.
- William Morris (1834–1896) was a British textile designer, poet, artist, fantasy writer, and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts movement. He was a major contributor to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production. His literary contributions helped to establish the modern fantasy genre, while he helped win acceptance of socialism in fin de siècle Great Britain.
- George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950), known at his insistence as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist.
