"The first editaon of thus book was published to celebrate the opening in 1979 of the Tate Gallery's extension. Ht drew particular attention te the many fine works which had been acquwred under my predecessors, Sar John Rethenstem and Sir Norman Reid.

“Thanks to the generosity of vur friends, benefactors, and of successive gevernments who provide our purchasing funds, the collection continues to grow. We are indeed fortunate to be able to go on building up fully representative and comprehensive collections of both Twentieth-century Art and British Painting of all periods, Some of the most recent acquisitions are mentioned in the pages that follow; others arc too new to be included.

We are grateful to our regular visitors for their support, and hope that newcomers will return. Well over a million visitors each ycar make the not easy journey to visit the Tate, and our attendance figures are steadily growing.

A word of warning: all the works illustrated and discussed here may not at the moment be on exhibition in the galleries. Many loans are made from the collection and, in return of course, we are able to hold special exhibitions. These take up space, and despite the much increased gallery area that the 1979 extension provided, we are still unable to show as much as we would like. Most of the important paintings in the British Collection are on view, but in the Modern Collection we can show only a part of our holdings. Key works are almost always on exhibition in the main sequence of galleries, but other sections of the collection are shown on a rotating basis. The information desk will be happy to answer any queries you may have.

Fortunately, a major expansion of the Tate Gallery on the hospital site, adjacent to the Tate on the Westminster side, is now in progress. As we go to press, the shape of the Clore Gallery for the Turner Collection can be clearly seen, and we expect that it will open to the public towards the end of 1985. The Gallery is deeply indebted to the Clore Foundation for their generosity in making this building possible.

It is, we hope, only the first of a group of new buildings, specially designed for us by James Stirling of Stirling, Wilford and Associates. We are actively planning the second phase — a Museum of New Art, and a Museum of Modern Sculpture, together with a sculpture conservation studio. We plan eventually to add a Library and Archive building, and a Museum of T wentieth-century Art, so that the existing Tate Gallery building would become a Museum of British Art, with a collection continuing to the present day.

We must plan for the future, however difficult it may be to achieve such plans. A museum collecting modern art is alive, vigorous, and growing all the time. Enormous progress has been made at the Tate Gallery in the last thirty years, and I am confident that the next twenty will show equally dramatic achievements.
