John Moffatt Mecklin was born on January 21, 1871, in Poplar Creek, Mississippi. He graduated from Southwestern Presbyterian University in 1890 and earned a Bachelor of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1896. After further studies in Germany, he received a Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig in 1899. Before joining Dartmouth College as a professor of sociology in 1920, Mecklin taught at Lafayette College, Washington and Jefferson College, and the University of Pittsburgh. His departure from Lafayette was the result of a widely publicized dispute with the college president over academic freedom. In 1920, Dartmouth awarded Mecklin an honorary degree. He retired from teaching in 1941 but continued writing
