The year 1990 Marks a milestone in the history of New Zealand commemorating 150 years since the treaty of Waitangi.

The 1940 Centennial year a series of books was distributed to every school. They were later bound into two volumes and entitled the Making Of New Zealand. Our modern presentation now captures the spirit of that previous celebration, serving as a reminder of those things past and offering up promise for the future.

The bone carving featured on the cover was created by Owen Mapp. Maori and Pakeha societies are represented in this piece by the taniwha and dragon - both mythical figures reflecting our Nations biculturalism. Peace, education and cultural richness are depicted by the quill and the adze.

This fresh volume of the Making Of New Zealand re-interprets our story in the light of experience. History, if well-documented, does not alter- nor does the essence of ideas and national characteristics. But the extent of the economic changes which have taken place in our country in the past 50 years have been enormous, and will undoubtedly develop even further as we face that 21st century.

With this book we salute New Zealand’s sesquicentennial year.
