Ijzerhart heeft een langzaam groeiend kernhout, wat donkerroodbruin tot zwart van kleur is. Het spint is lichtgeel en steekt duidelijk af tegen het donkere kernhout. De bomen worden gemiddeld 10 meter hoog met een diameter van 0,6-0,9 meter.

De bewerkbaarheid van Ijzerhart is vrij moeilijk vanwege de hardheid. Zagen, schaven en draaien kan hierdoor enige problemen veroorzaken. Het stof kan soms irriterend werken op daarvoor gevoelige personen.

Wamara, Swartzia benthamiana, is a tree commonly found in South America that grows up to 30 m in height. It has a small crown and a straight bole with few low buttresses and can be 40 - 50 cm in diameter. It has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria that form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Though not edible, it serves medicinal purposes. The trunk yields red latex which can be used to ease toothache. The leaves and bark when crushed are also used as relief from toothache. The wood is suitable for heavy construction and woodwork.The sawdust from wood of plants in this genus can be irritating to mill workers. It's a strong, dense, and attractive timber used in high-class furniture, cabinet making, and other applications where strength and durability are needed.

Swartzia benthamiana is a tree with a small crown; it can grow up to 30 metres tall. The straight bole can be flat or somewhat flanged in shape with a few low buttresses. It can be 40 - 50cm in diameter, exceptionally to 70cm and can be unbranched for up to 20 metres. Reputed to be one of the most beautiful woods of the Amazon Valley, it is commonly harvested from the wild for local use and for export.
