Beschrijving

A set of two Japanese Satsuma teacups and saucers possibly dating back to the meiji (1868–1912) period. Satsuma being a form of earthenware which is typically characterised by its ivory coloured crackle glazes. It originally dates back to the 16th century.

Satsuma ware often depicts illustrations in which organic shapes or spiritual creatures play a key role. From Cherry Blossoms, to spiritual animals such as a dragon or phoenix and more.

The cups along with the saucers each, display a band of samurai/warriors along with a white scaled dragon. A white dragon can also be seen acting as a handle for the cups. The samurai likely depicted courage, camaraderie, friendship and loyalty while the dragon probably symbolizes good fortune or serves as a guardian.

The bottom of each item is signed with a 4 sign filled square. The saucers come with an extra segment in which the upper line reads Great Nippon or Great Japan from right to left. The text in the middle I haven't yet deciphered.

IMPORTANT. Note that one cup is in a perfect antique condition, the other one has been carefully put together again after having been shattered likely due to a fall. The saucers are in a perfect antique condition.

The cups weigh 0,1 kg, have a width of 7 cm, a height of 6 cm and a depth of 9,5 cm. The saucers weigh 0,15 kg, have a diameter of 12,5 cm and a height of 2,5 cm.
