THE SLOW READER
A Problem in Two Parts
R.C. Ablewhite
Heinemann, London, 1967

Hard cover, dust jacket, 13,5 x 120,5 cm, 225 gr. Good condition.; dust jacket moderate.

“The book is intended for all teachers who
have to cope with slow or reluctant
readers, either in ordinary or special
schools and at either primary or
secondary stage. The author shows that
the problems facing the child at the
primary stage are different in nature from
those facing the child at secondary stage.
He asks the teacher to consider basic
principles before trying to find the best
method. He relates theory to the hard
work of classroom practice and avoids
the use of difficult technical terms.
The first two chapters set out the
problems in practical terms using the
material taken from actual classroom
work. The third chapter suggests the
basic principles of a good initial teaching
scheme, while the fourth chapter shows
how neglect of these principles leads to a
far graver problem of the older child.
Chapter Five gives a simplified account of
a research project into the causes of these
graver problems and the final chapter
suggests how these may best be dealt with
at the secondary stage. The book is
illustrated and supported by a
bibliography.
The book will undoubtedly be of great
value and encouragement to teachers and
students in Colleges and Departments of
Education, and to interested parents.
