Introduced in 1969, the TAG Heuer Monaco was named in honour of the world-famous Grand Prix Formula 1 race.

Designed to showcase Heuer’s new Calibre 11 movement, the Monaco was the first self-winding, water-resistant chronograph with a square case in the world. The watch was well received upon its release, but really gained fame after being worn by Steve McQueen in the 1971 motor racing film Le Mans.

The blue dialed Monaco featured prominently in the film, cementing the watches image with the golden era of motorsports and McQueen himself. Today the Monaco is available in two case sizes and 6 different dial variants, including a modern iteration of the one seen in Le Mans.

The design has remained true to the original, with only minor modifications and improvements in technology made to keep it in line with modern watchmaking. For those looking for an avant-garde racing chronograph that oozes 70’s cool, the TAG Heuer Monaco should be the first port of call.
