Silver-tone stainless steel case with a silver-tone stainless steel bracelet. Tachymeter scale black titanium bezel. Black dial with luminous hands and index hour markers hour markers. Tag Heuer Calibre 17 RS Automatic movement, based upon ETA 2894-2, containing 37 Jewels, bitting at 28800 vph, and has a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. Scratch resistant sapphire crystal. Screw down crown. Skeleton case back. Round case shape, case size: 43 mm. Band width: 21.6 mm, band length: 8.5 inches. Deployment clasp. Water resistant at 100 meters / 330 feet. Introduced in 1963, the Carrera is a motorsport chronograph and is one of the most popular series in the TAG Heuer collection.
The watch was conceived by former CEO Jack Heuer, who named it after the notoriously dangerous Carrera Panamericana race of the 1950’s. He set out with the goal of making the most legible and practical wristwatch when driving, one that was capable of timing laps and calculating speeds.
The result was a minimalistic design, shedding anything that would hinder functionality and legibility when on the track. Heading into the 70’s the Carrera evolved in a period many collectors regard as its golden age, adding a self-winding movement and experimenting with bolder dial designs. The series was discontinued at the height of the quartz crisis in 1984, a year in which Heuer were sold to Techniques d’Avant Garde (TAG) and the watch collections were restructured.
The Carrera eventually made a comeback in 1996 and has remained a staple of TAG Heuer ever since. The watch is available in a variety of colours, complications and sizes whilst remaining true to the guiding principle behind the original design.
