De band heeft door de geschiedenis heen verschillende opstellingen gehad wat opname en optreden betreft, waarbij Santana het enige consistente lid is gebleven. Na een contract bij Columbia Records vergrootte hun optreden op het Woodstock-festival in 1969 hun bekendheid en ze begonnen de kritisch bejubelde en commercieel succesvolle albums Santana (1969), Abraxas (1970) en Santana III (1971) op te nemen. Deze werden opgenomen door de band zijn “klassieke” line-up, bestaande uit organist en leadzanger Gregg Rolie, percussionisten José "Chepito" Areas en Michael Carabello, drummer Michael Shrieve en bassist David Brown. Zijn geluid kenmerkt zich door melodische, op blues gebaseerde lijnen tegen Latin American en African ritmes gespeeld op percussie-instrumenten die normaal gesproken in rock niet vaak te horen zijn, zoals timbales en congas.
