New Order is an English rock band formed in Salford in 1980 by singer and guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris.
Their fusion of post-punk and electronic music made them one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s. The band formed after the breakup of their previous group, Joy Division, following the suicide of singer Ian Curtis. Later that year, keyboardist Gillian Gilbert joined New Order. The band became the flagship act of the Manchester-based independent label Factory Records and its nightclub, The Haçienda. They collaborated for many years with graphic designer Peter Saville, who created the artwork for their album covers. Drawing on Joy Division's post-punk heritage, their experience on the New York club scene of the early 1980s taught them to incorporate dance rhythms and electronic instruments into their music.

Their 1983 hit, "Blue Monday," became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time and a club staple. During the 1980s, they released several successful albums, including *Power, Corruption & Lies* (1983), *Technique* (1989), and the singles compilation *Substance* (1987).
In 2023, both Joy Division and New Order were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
