The set features all Gullin compositions, save one tribute number -- recorded by an octet that has swinging spirit Lars would have really loved -- lots of modern edges on the solos, but a straightforward approach that Gullin almost always promoted as a great way to get his creative message across! There's an interesting juxtaposition going on here, as the alto sax of Lee Konitz is heard where Gullin's mighty baritone might normally be -- which makes for a really fresh vision of the tunes, and a very different setting for Konitz as well.
