Boys and girl groups do not usually stay together for long. Take That, Westlife and The Spice Girls: they all split up after a few successful years to offer the individual members room for a solo career. The Backstreet Boys are the exception to that rule. The 'boys' who scored their first hit with We've Got It Going On in 1996 have now become men and their early fans have probably developed other musical preferences. The music on Never Gone, their first since Black & Blue ('00), has hardly developed. The formula has remained the same and all songs are written the same way. After a sensitive sung restrained verse (with a gasp in the voice), an exuberant polyphonic chorus follows that you feel coming miles ahead. Never Gone is not a balanced album but a random collection of potential singles, which can hardly be distinguished from each other. Backstreet's back, but for how long?
