  • Upton Beall Sinclair Jr. (1878–1968) was an American author. He was a member of the Socialist Party of America and ran for the U.S. Congress multiple times, but was never elected. In 1934, he ran as the Democratic Party candidate for the gubernatorial elections in California, with a program aimed at poverty reduction. His campaign garnered a large following, but the business community raised large sums of money for a conservative counter-campaign. And so Sinclair lost to the Republican candidate.

In 1943, Upton Sinclair won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
