This book wants to invite the reader to look beyond the painting. Tuymans is and remains a painter, but a lot happens in the margins of his painting, both before and after painting. The artist recently opened up the previously largely hidden part of his artistic practice, consisting of Polaroids and other documents, making it possible to map his fascinations and work processes.
Tuymans willingly allows himself to be seen as someone with a pronounced commitment to so-called 'visual culture', someone who has the ambition to achieve something of real significance through the solidified image. As if driven by the fear of boredom, he allows interpretations and misunderstandings to fester unchecked.
