Telkens weet hij gevoelens en ritme uit te drukken in een materie die van nature koud en statisch is.
Hierdoor krijgt zijn schijnbaar disparaat oeuvre een zeldzaam universele kracht.
In zijn werk vloeien vorm en inhoud in elkaar, net zoals de kristallen van de materie op 1400?C onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden worden.
Hierbij speelt de herhaling een paradoxale rol.
Piet Stockmans heeft het repetitieve getransponeerd van een onvermijdelijk technisch proces in de industrie, tot een artistiek expressiemiddel in zijn vrije werk.
De merkwaardige paradox ligt in het feit dat hij zichzelf nooit herhaalt, maar dat hij steeds verbaast met nieuwe, onverwachte wendingen.
Piet Stockmans' witte wereld met blauwe accenten is zo even herkenbaar als onvoorspelbaar.
Ze is een gave uitdrukking van tekens, die soms functioneel, maar altijd esthetisch zijn.
Dicht bij het creatieve proces staat zijn echtgenote die, als eerste critica, een verdoken maar onvervangbare rol vervult.
Naast zijn drievoudige scheppende bezigheden, draagt Piet Stockmans zijn kunde over als docent industriële vormgeving aan de afdeling productdesign van de Katholieke Hogeschool Limburg te Genk.
Door zijn origineel, veelzijdig en grensverleggend omgaan met porselein, bekleedt Piet Stockmans een unieke plaats in de Vlaamse naoorlogse kunstgeschiedenis.

De creaties van ontwerper en keramist Piet Stockmans zijn tot ver voorbij onze landsgrenzen bekend en geliefd.
Zijn hele leven staat in het teken van porselein, een materiaal waarvan hij de grenzen aftast.
Bij velen zullen vooral zijn porseleinen serviezen een belletje doen rinkelen, die door toprestaurants in binnen- en buitenland gebruikt worden.
En er bestaat zelfs een kleur die zijn naam draagt, het Piet Stockmansblauw, een kleur die hij tijdens een experiment bij toeval ontdekte en die steeds terugkomt in zijn werk.
Naast zijn werk als keramist is Piet Stockmans erg actief als beeldend kunstenaar: zijn kunstinstallaties en kunstobjecten worden gesmaakt door kunstverzamelaars en musea, o.a. het Londense Victoria & Albertmuseum en het Gentse Designmuseum.
