TCP/IP section is good, SMS REALLY DATED v1.0 [1997-09-24]

I used this exam to write the 2 MCSE electives and i scored pretty well. The SMS part is really old, MS is at 1.2 now, and thsi book covers 1.0. However, this book has just about the BEST and EASIEST to understand explination on how to do subnetting with subnet masks. It breaks down the TCP/IP address is great detail and its still easy to understand. This book is worth having alone just for it's Subnet mask explination and examples.

The Best Book for Preparing for TCP/IP certification [1998-07-18]

When preparing for the TCP/IP exam, I read both Sybex, and New Riders books. The New Riders covered exactly what was on the exam. It was much more detailed and to-the-point. It really got down to the nitty-gritty "what you need to know". It is definitely worth the money!

TCP/IP section good, SMS section poor [1996-11-18]

I read the TCP/IP section through easily. The style is comfortable and the material is perfect for both the Microsoft Test and real life. DHCP configuration, WINS replication, host name resolution, etc. are all covered in detail. The SMS Section is very difficult to read through. There are definitely two writers for this book! After the first few chapters, I gave up on this one. Overall, the book is very usefull. Don't plan on using the SMS section as a first-timer (like me). The TCP/IP will take you from the ground-floor on up. It was definitely worth the price just for the TCP/IP section.

This massive book is intended as a study guide for computer professionals seeking certification as a Microsoft Certified Product Specialist (MCPS) or Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). The Microsoft certification programs are designed to assess the technological proficiency of the computer professional.

The book provides two separate study guides for the reader. These study guides support two of the electives for the Microsoft certification programs. The electives are TCP/IP and Systems Management Server (SMS).

The TCP/IP guide covers the material required to pass the Internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on Windows NT 3.5 Exam. This exam is one of the electives for the MCPS and MCSE certification programs. The TCP/IP study guide covers the information that a computer professional needs to understand in order to successfully pass the exam. Some of the topics covered in the study guide are the installation and configuration of Microsoft TCP/IP on the server and client stations, IP addressing together with its associated classes and subnets, use of DHCP, (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), routing and address resolution and troubleshooting.

The second study guide covers the SMS, testing the reader's ability to implement, manage and troubleshoot the Systems Management Server. The guide covers such topics as planning, installation and configuration, job creation, shared network applications and remote control utilities to remotely manage SMS clients.

Each chapter includes review questions to help out the reader understand better the topics discussed. The frequent notes, tips and warnings complement these. A complementary CD-ROM provides additional knowledge with a test engine loaded with hundreds of questions to help familiarise and prepare the reader for the actual TCP/IP and SMS exams.

Overall, the book is very informative, but the TCP/IP guide is restricted to the Microsoft implementation of the TCP/IP protocol stack. In fact the author stresses this point in the introduction. For those who wish to obtain Microsoft certification in Microsoft TCP/IP and SMS, this book is of benefit, even though it is not that cheap. But I would suggest following a training course too. Personally I believe that the book on its own will not guarantee that the reader will pass the exam. An instructor is always of additional help.

--- Over (foto 2): MS Certified Systems Engineer MCSE ---

An MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) is someone who has passed exams about the Microsoft Windows NT operating system, related desktop systems, networking, and Microsoft's BackOffice server products. To prepare for the exams, you can take courses at a certified training company location, in certified courses in a high school or college, or through self-study at Microsoft's self-study Web site or through certified training materials.

The MCSE program is the most popular of a set of training programs that Microsoft calls the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). In other MCP programs, you can gain certification as a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD), a Microsoft Certified Product Specialist (MCPS), or a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT).
