“Solemnly the tall young man raised his dagger towards the window. There were five of us seated around a low table in a semi-dark room above a Manhattan night club. Outside, the busy evening traffic of the West Forties created an incongruous background of worldliness, technology, and people going places to spend an evening of fun. Here, in this cold room above the night club, a witches’ circle was about to be cast and consecrated. The doors had been locked, shades drawn across the window, and the only light in the room came from two flickering candles…”
“Five people, reasonable, gainfully employed, no special hang-ups… A new coven is about to be formed. The date is December 1970, not the Middle Ages, not even the terrible times of seventeenth-century Salem, Massachusetts. The secrecy of the meeting is self-imposed.”
Similar meetings were taking place all over the country: the pagan revival was on the march. In The New Pagans: An Inside Report on the Mystery Cults of Today, Hans Holzer takes the reader inside the world of modern witchcraft and paganism as it emerged in the United States around 1970.
Hans Holzer (1920–2009), born in Vienna and based in New York, was one of the best-known researchers of the paranormal and the author of more than a hundred books, including The Truth About Witchcraft. In this book The New Pagans he documents a movement that was then still largely hidden. Modern witchcraft, or Wicca, had been brought into the open in England in the 1950s by Gerald Gardner, and in the 1960s it spread to America, where covens began to form in cities across the country.
A fascinating period document for anyone interested in Wicca, witchcraft, paganism, the occult revival of the 1960s and 1970s, and the history of modern alternative religion.
