The chofa (chofah) is one of the most characteristic elements of traditional Thai Buddhist architecture. Traditionally installed at the ends of temple roofs, it has a slender, upward-reaching silhouette inspired by mythical creatures from the Hindu-Buddhist tradition. This piece is not an architectural element removed from a temple roof; it is an independent sculpture representing and reproducing the traditional forms of the chofa. The sculpture depicts a fantastical creature with an elongated body, an expressive head, an open mouth, a pointed element and a large curved crest. The entire piece is richly decorated with carved vegetal and geometric motifs. The dark brown wood is enhanced with aged and naturally irregular gilding, highlighting the various reliefs and giving the sculpture considerable depth and character.Standing 145 cm tall, this sculpture has a strong monumental presence and makes a particularly striking and original decorative object.DimensionsSculpture height: 145 cmPedestal: 25 × 25 cmMaterial: Carved woodFinish: Dark brown wood with gilded accentsOrigin: ThailandA Particularly Decorative PieceWith its impressive dimensions, elaborate carving and architectural character, this chofa is a rare and original decorative sculpture, equally suited to a collection of Asian art or to a contemporary interior looking for a monumental object with strong visual presence and symbolic character.
