African Basket of the Tutsi, RwandaSize: 15 cm high and 11 cm diameter. This basket of the Tutsi from Rwanda is a remarkable example of traditional craftsmanship, rich in cultural significance. A soul in finely woven basketwork is covered with green, red and white beads and is decorated with typical motifs of Tutsi symbolism, namely lightning bolts and stars. These colours and shapes are not chosen by chance: they convey social, spiritual and hierarchical codes.It is mainly used to store valuable objects, ritual substances or symbolic goods. This type of provision testifies to the artistic refinement and social organisation of the Tutsi population. The beads, elements of prestige, also reflect the status of the person who owned the object.
