Massimo Scolari : An Architectural VisionaryThe Paintings & Drawings & marquettes by Massimo Scolari, evoke an archaic, dream-like state of vision. The often barren, desolate scenes depict views long into the distant nothing-ness. They speak about Scolari's detached sense of creative freedom and his ability to feel comfortable in that mode of thought. The wings which appear to resemble that of a pheonix, may provide that signal to a flight of fantasy or dream. Ruinous buildings & monoliths are scattered through the scenes, at times bombarding or providing strong visual obstacles.
The chairs with the winged backs are playful, the cobalt blue felt/velvet upholstery is striking & like the chairs in Wright's price tower, sit very elegantly with the golden hues of the lacquered timber frame. They sit very elegantly with the dramatised classical base of the timber table, which is weighted to ground it solidly.
these images recall a time before ours, perhaps were the fortification enabled a secret world to exist in each place, without distraction or having succumbed to a stronger enemy. In this sense, Scolari will always sit on the outside, without defeat by the forces of the outside.
