Two Chinese Kinrade Porcelain Polychrome Bowls – Ming Dynasty, c. 1550–1580A pair of rare Chinese Kinrade porcelain bowls, dating to the Late Ming dynasty, Late Jiajing, Longqing or Early Wanli period (c. 1550–1580).Each bowl is decorated in the well with a finely painted underglaze blue scene of a water bird among lotus plants, while the exterior was originally embellished with thick overglaze polychrome enamels inspired by luxurious brocade textiles. Kinrade wares represent one of the most distinctive export porcelains of the late Ming period, produced primarily for the Japanese tea market, although examples also reached Portugal during the late 16th century.Unlike most surviving examples, these two bowls clearly demonstrate the fragile nature of the overglaze enamels. On one bowl the exterior polychrome decoration has almost completely worn away over the centuries, while the second bowl retains faint traces of the original enamels. The interiors remain attractively decorated in underglaze blue, providing an excellent study of the original Kinrade production technique and its characteristic combination of underglaze and overglaze decoration.REFERENCE:A similar bowl sold at Lyon and Turnbull (£450)https://www.lyonandturnbull.com/auctions/asian-works-of-art-681/lot/177A similar bowl sold by us on Catawiki:https://www.catawiki.com/nl/l/101614435-bowl-porselein-kinrade-china-ming-dynastie-1368-1644See a similar bowl at the: Art Gallery of New South Wales:https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection/works/63.1984/Also a similar bowl at the Princessehof Museum:https://collectie.princessehof.nl/?diw-id=tresoar_princessehof_GRV-1929-162Dimensions:Bowl 1: Diameter 11.5 cm × Height 6 cmBowl 2: Diameter 11.6 cm × Height 6.3 cmCondition:Both bowls display an glaze surface consistent with long burial or submersion with matting an scratches.
