Rare vintage S34 cantilever armchair, designed by Mart Stam and produced by Thonet, Germany, circa 1960s/1970s.
The S34 is one of the most iconic Bauhaus-related cantilever chair designs, based on Mart Stam’s pioneering tubular steel construction from the 1920s. Its floating seat, clean architectural lines and chrome tubular frame make it a timeless modernist design classic.
This example is especially interesting because of its rare reinforced chrome frame version, featuring two additional tubular support elements. These extra tubes give the chair a stronger, more architectural appearance compared to the standard S34 version, making this particular example more unusual and visually distinctive.
The chair is marked “S34” on the underside/canvas, supporting the model identification. It features a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with black leather seat, backrest and armrests.
The leather has developed a beautiful vintage patina over the decades, with visible craquelure, surface cracking, scuffs and tonal wear, especially on the seat and edges. This natural ageing gives the chair strong character and authenticity. The patina has not been hidden or over-restored, making the chair a true vintage Bauhaus piece with history.
