Hans Bellmann for Strässle Söhne & Co — ‘Sitwell’ Easy Chair, ca. 1955

A sculptural and exceptionally rare example of Swiss post-war modernism, designed by Hans Bellmann (1911 – 1990) — architect, Bauhaus graduate and former collaborator of Mies van der Rohe.

Created in a time of reconstruction and experimentation, the Sitwell Chair embodies Bellmann’s search for structural lightness and human warmth. The organically moulded shell, executed in fiberglass-reinforced polyester, floats on a minimal black-enameled steel frame. Its wide, embracing silhouette and precise geometry illustrate the designer’s architectural rigor and sensitivity to comfort.

This particular piece stands out through its striking black-and-white plaid upholstery, enhancing the rhythmic curves of the form and underlining Bellmann’s fascination with visual balance.
