Description
This striking vintage Korean medicine chest, also known as a yakchang, was traditionally used to store herbs and remedies in small labeled drawers. Crafted from rich hardwood with warm reddish tones, the chest features 16 small drawers, each adorned with hand-painted Chinese characters and fitted with brass ring pulls.
The piece is accented with ornate brass hardware, including corner brackets, decorative hinges, and a large central lock plate on the lower cabinet doors, which open to reveal additional storage. Its slightly curved feet and upward-turned edges on the top add elegant detail to its classic Korean design.
A wonderful blend of form and function, this apothecary chest works beautifully as a statement accent piece, offering both cultural charm and practical storage. Perfect for collectors of Asian antiques, herbalists, or anyone looking to add a touch of history to their home décor.
Fish-shaped lock charms in Korean culture are traditional symbols of abundance, wealth, and protection.
Fish never close their eyes, even when they are sleeping, so they also symbolize watchfulness and vigilance, fitting the motif for a lock, as it “keeps watch” over the medicines inside.
