This “Vicarage Clock” from J. W. Benson (1826-1878) was called this way because it strikes so softly and was very much suited for a library or dining room as seen on the newspaper advertisement inserted here.
J. W. Benson Ltd had a branch in 25 Old Bond Street, London, from 1872 until 1873. As this address is on the dial, I think this clock dates from this period. At least the mechanism was not made in London but in Paris, also mentioned on the dial.
Reverend Thomas Henry Stedman Polehampton was the owner of the clock. He received it in April 1887 on his leaving as a gift from the parishioners of Lawhitton, Cornwall, in token of their affectionate esteem, as can be seen on the plaque at the bottom of the clock.
In the “Western Times”, Exeter, Devon, England, of 17 June 1887, we can read:
“The clock was gifted to him on his leaving the curacy of Lawhitton, in token of their affectionate esteem.", as shown on the plate. This article also mentions that the clock has a fifteen day movement and was made by Benson and that his future wife was in the audience.
Reverend Thomas Henry Stedman Polehampton was married in North Petherwyn, Launceston, on 9 August 1887, to Miss M. H. Trentham. They were married by his father Rev J. Polehampton, rector of Ightham, Kent, and assisted by the bride's father Rev T. R. Trentham, vicar of North Petherwyn. Our bridegroom was now curate of Sampford Courtenay.
He seems to also have been an army chaplain around 1902.
John Henry Trencham Polehampton was his only son. He served in the North Somerset Yeomanry as a Lieutenant from 1914 until 1920.
The mechanism is of very high quality and perfectly functional.
Height: 38,5 cm.
The minute hand is not original.
The top ornament on the clock is restored.
