About Portuguese majolica: "Portugal has been a hub for ceramic production for centuries. Indeed, much of the finer dinnerware product currently available in the United States (as well as the more durable stuff) originates in Portugal. The lack of awareness of the quality of Portuguese wares is because the majority of imported product is being made for other brand names- not to mention the continued Anglo/Francocentric status of the American market." Portuguese majolica is of a style called "Palissy," named after Frenchman Bernard Palissy who introduced in the 1500s the glaze used in much or Portugal's ceramics.
