IL COSTUME ITALIANE DEGLI ETRUSCHI. [ITALY LARGE PAPER COPY, 246 plates]THE MOST MAGNIFICENT COLOUR PLATE BOOKS OF THE EARLY 19th CENTURY IN EXQUISITE HAND COLORING. VOL I. Large fold out map of Italy (with a small tear) 57 plates, 1-603 pp The majority of them hand colored. Spine damaged. A few pages still unopened. MILANO, Dalla Tipografia Dell Editore 1820. Title page with date and number 98.A few pages loose.VOL III. Parte Prima. COSTUME DEGLI ITALIANI DALL invasion de Barbari. 48 plates. 1-328 pp. Binding preserved. Only half title. VOL III. Parte Secunda. 329 – 1004 pp. 141 plates. Spine loose, and damaged (Only half title). This first edition was printed in an exclusive run of no more than 300 copies under royal patronage. No expense was spared. The plates are printed on wove paper and bear the publisher’s dry stamp. The margins are exceptionally wide. They could be bound to taste as they came straight from the press. The spine labels of these books are original 19th morocco but the bindings themselves are late 19th, early 20th and not pretty, with browned end leaves. Inside they are nearly pristine.Funding for this massive undertaking was secured through public subscription with royal backing. The list of 211 so-called associates was headed by Emperor Francis II, Holy Roman emperor, followed by thirteen members of European royalty and high nobility. Subscribers could choose between hand-colored or black-and-white editions. Only royalty, aristocracy, and the highest ranks of society could afford the exquisitely hand-colored examples. Subscriptions were also taken by numerous public libraries in Italy, as well as in major cities such as Berlin, Leipzig, London, Mannheim, Munich, Paris, St. Petersburg, and Vienna.Ferrario, an erudite ecclesiastic, served as director of the Biblioteca Braidense, Milan's principal public library. This institution was part of a broader cultural complex that included the Accademia and Pinacoteca of Brera, where leading artists of the era trained and where many of the prints for Il costume antico e moderno were produced.Ferrario's 21-volume work builds on the tradition of early modern costume books with a global perspective. As part of this long-standing tradition, the encyclopedic work also reflects a burgeoning editorial movement in early 19th-century Milan, where compilations of contemporary travel literature were gaining popularity. Driven by a publishing industry eager to establish a canon of modern travel literature from the past fifty years, Ferrario's work incorporates diaries, travelogues, and letters—many of which feature sketches and watercolors—that had previously not been selected, edited, or translated. These volumes were made for subscriber No. 98, for "Don Francesco Pozzi da Perago." Do not confuse this work with the cheaper versions for the general public that appeared later in quarto and octavo. These books are very heavy and will be send with Fedex priority for less then I have to pay for it myself. You can read the following article on the internet on Ferrario's massive undertaking.
