Deze antieke houten driver uit 1900 van S. Freemantle uit Oostende geeft een inkijkje in vroege hickory golf en Belgische golfgeschiedenis.

BELGIAN INTERESTAntique Wooden driverMarked on the top of the club headS. Freemantle, OstendSam FreemantleCannes/OstendBrother of William Freemantle, and equally attracted to playing his golf in continental Europe, Sam was born in Upham in 1873.He was professional at Cannes, in France, and Ostend, in Belgium, when he returned to Clayhall near Gosport in November 1903 to marry Alice Freeman. The wedding report stating they would leave for Cannes for their honeymoon sounds idyllic but does not state whether Alice would be caddying or just making sandwiches. They were living in Spa in Belgium, where he was professional from 1912, at the outbreak of World War I and seem to have been interned for the duration of the war. After the war he was back in France as Arnaud Massy’s assistant at St Jean de Luz and then professional at Ste Barbe. In both places he coached the great French female player and teenage prodigy Simone Thion de la Chaume.By the time of the 1939 survey he was back in Hampshire. He died in 1952.Beech wood club head. beautiful shape and colorBelow the face a small piece of ram's horn for protection fixed with wooden pegsNice hickory wood shaft and very good leather grip.
