It has only been a few decades since we have been able to date these bronzes accurately.

The existing stylistic and iconographic analyses were supplemented by excavation campaigns conducted in the west of the Middle East between 1965 and 1979 by the University of Ghent and the Royal Museums of Brussels.

These enabled the localization of a large number of collective tombs filled with objects. Thanks to the intact stratigraphy of the surroundings, it is now possible to date them. By referring to these studies, archaeologists can calculate more precisely the date of manufacture of the bronze sculptures: between the 11th century and the mid-7th century BC, at the end of the Iron Age.

A LUXURIOUS BESTIARY

The large multitude of artifacts discovered in the Middle East is divided into three main categories: pavilions (or flowers), metalwork pieces from horse harnesses, and brooches. Various types of bronze pieces (daggers, spears and axes, among others) have also been discovered, but not in the same proportions.

Les fleurons sont des objets qu’on plaçait au sommet de bâtons. C’est leur iconographie sophistiquée, inspirée par la faune et plus particulièrement par les bouquetins, qui les rend si uniques. Le « Maître des Animaux » en est une des versions les plus connues et les plus fascinantes. Ce motif représente un personnage humain tenant des animaux sauvages par le cou (généralement un homme, quoique certains soient à l’effigie de femmes).
