Often referred to as "Crusader swords" because of their resemblance to swords from, and possibly a legacy of, the 14th-century Crusades.

These swords were carried by Sudanese warriors and used in the colonial wars against the British armies. They have a history as direct descendants of the European Crusader swords of the Middle Ages. The blade is marked on both sides with two opposing crescents. It is believed that the crescent-shaped marks date back to the manufacturer's mark of Juan Martin Martinez of Spain from before the 18th century and that they were still in use later. The cross-shaped steel handle is typical of Kaskara swords and shows medieval influence.
This particular example is very unusual because the blade is engraved with Arabic text on both sides. Both may be poems or verses from the Quran.
