Original abney level by cooke troughton en simms london and york engraved in the front (merged with cooke t. In 1922) .
Brass construction, mainly black lacquered. Extending sighting tube. Rotative level bubble tube. Magnifier and angle scales 60-30-30-60 divisions of 60° left and 60° right everything in very good condition. Superficial signs of use (brass appears at position of fingers) personalized (inside lid handwritten) magnificent cowhide case i.m.russell (commander?)
Level = 3,5 x 18,2 x 8cm highly collectable d-day object. The abney level, invented in 1870 or ‘the miniature theodolite’, rectangular telescope with a semicircle arc on the side, graduated in degrees for measuring vertical angles, and small spirit level. Viewing through the telescope at any angle a mirror reflection of the spirit bubble can be viewed through small window to line up horizontal or determine angles of inclination.
