He embarked on two significant pirate voyages, meeting a tragic end on the second. Notably, he pioneered the route that became known as the Pirate Round.Rhode Island, a haven for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries, benefited from the wealth they brought in after raiding shipping. However, the colony eventually turned against piracy.Pirates were commissioned as privateers to capture enemy ships, and the captured ships and their contents were legally declared their property. They did not pay customs taxes to England, but the colony received a percentage of the loot.
