The Joshua Tree est le cinquième album studio dugroupe de rock irlandais U2 . Produit par Daniel Lanois et Brian Eno , il est sorti le 9 mars 1987 chez Island Records . Contrairement auxexpérimentations ambient de leur album de 1984, The Unforgettable Fire ,le groupe a opté pour un son plus percutant avec The Joshua Tree, tout en respectant les structures de chansons conventionnelles. Influencé par les musiques roots américaines et, à travers des textes engagés et empreints d'imagerie spirituelle, oppose l'antipathie du groupe pour « l'Amérique réelle » à sa fascination pour « l'Amérique mythique ». Le thème de l'album s'inspire de leurs expériences aux États-Unis, ainsi que de la littérature et de la politique américaines.
