The creature is shown facing to the right, with an elongated head, curved body and a prominent spiral element to the left, probably forming the tail or rear part of the animal.The motif may be interpreted as a “Great Beast” type creature, a strongly stylised mythical or dragon-like animal associated with Scandinavian animal ornament. The design combines flowing curves, interlaced elements and an expressive zoomorphic form. The engraved scene is enclosed by a dotted or beaded border around the bezel.The “Great Beast” motif is generally associated with power and prestige in late Viking Age Scandinavian art. Entwined animal compositions have also been interpreted symbolically as a struggle between opposing forces, although the precise meaning of the motif remains debated.
