Copper engraving, “The arrest of the Duke of Aarschot and other nobles at Ghent, 28 October 1577”An early 17th-century copper engraving showing the seizure of Philippe de Croÿ III, Duke of Aarschot, the Viscount of Ghent, the Count of Egmont and other Catholic noblemen at the Court of Saint Bavo in Ghent. Armed men crowd the gateway; the prisoners are led out under guard while onlookers press in from both sides. Below the image, four lines of Latin verse in two columns.The plate is by Simon Frisius after the composition of Frans Hogenberg, and comes from Willem Baudartius, Afbeeldinghe ende beschrijvinghe van alle de veldslagen, belegeringen ende and’re notable geschiedenissen ghevallen in de Nederlanden, published in Amsterdam by Michiel Colijn, 1615–1616. The reverse carries the accompanying Dutch letterpress text in blackletter, headed “Hoe de doorluchtighe Hooch-gheboorene Vorst Matthias, Arch-Hertoghe van Oostenrijck, versocht is tot het Gouverneurschap der Neder-landen, Anno 1577” — the account of the mission of the Lord of Malstede to Vienna, the conspiracy that led directly to the arrest depicted on the front.Below the plate an old handwritten annotation in brown ink names the scene and the year 1577.The arrest was the moment the Calvinist faction under Jan van Hembyze took control of Ghent. It broke the Catholic nobility’s grip on the States General and pushed the Revolt into its radical phase.The sheet is presented in a double-glazed gilt frame with brown and gold mounts, so that both the engraving and the printed text on the reverse can be viewed. It comes with a purple silk clamshell presentation box lined in cream moiré, together with a typewritten collector’s note describing the subject.Condition: GoodThe impression is clear and legible, with the plate mark and full letterpress text intact. Light age-toning and scattered foxing, mainly at the sheet edges. Some browning in the upper corners of the image, visible in the photographs. The handwritten annotation is slightly faded. Frame and presentation box in good condition with minor rubbing to the box edges. Not examined outside the frame.Measurements: Plate 18 × 19 cm. Framed 27 × 37 cm. Presentation box slightly larger.Shipping: Medium package. Frame will be corner-protected, glass taped, and packed with the box in a double-walled carton.
